Driving Through Denali Highway

It was two years ago on our way back from our fishing trip to Chitina, our friends invited us to make a detour and use Denali highway from Paxson junction to Cantwell then back to Fairbanks. Paxson junction is 175 miles to Fairbanks. Cantwell to Fairbanks 152 miles.

Denali highway is about 135 miles from Paxson junction to Cantwell. The road is long, remote, and is mostly gravel but it was a memorable and fantastic drive. Awesome views of mountain ranges, rivers, lakes, glaciers, and valleys. However, the only wildlife we saw was HUMANS.

We spent a night in Tangle Lakes campground, milepost 21.5 or about 34 minutes from paxon junction. Nice campground but there are no trees around. The campground was pretty full when we arrived there. The lakes were beautiful as well, people were fishing on it and some were just enjoying it with their kayaks. The campgrounds also have nice hiking trails. A good stop to rest for a night.

We also stopped at MacLaren River Lodge and had their famous homemade pie and ice cream.

  1. Beautiful photos! Alaska is simply breathtaking.

  2. I have always heard about how beautiful Denali is and your photos support that. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Thank you! Denali Park I believed is way beautiful than Denali highway. I have never been inside the park. I should put it on my bucket list.
